| i did not know this monument existed until we checked into our b&b. finished in 1891, this 306 feet tall limestone block monument was erected in honor of the american victory over Gen. Burgoyne's british forces at the Battle of Bennington in 1777. the edges of the obelisk are curved, making a very pleasant retreating form as the structure rises to its peak. it had rained a few hours before we arrived, and the remaining clouds decorated the clearing sky. the rough surface provided a wonderful texture allowing for an interesting interplay of light and shadow. an elevator took us to the observation level . the view was inspiring. |
