the holga is an inexpensive, plastic, “toy” camera designed and first appearing in china in 1982. it uses 120 roll film, has a plastic, fixed-focus lens, and is used in alternative photography circles. i took an evening class at the university of cincinnati that focused entirely on the holga. this portfolio of twelve photos is a result of an assignment to “shoot through something.” i gathered flowers and other spring growth, brought them into my basement, and photographed them through a magnifying glass under a combination of fluorescent and incandescent lights. some flowers were suspended in air using thread and some were held in place using alligator clips.

“A taste for flowers and a love for the beautiful, as exhibited in the wonders of creative power, are evidences of a refined and sensitive nature, and peculiar traits of character which distinguish man from the lower order of animals. The ox or horse may roam at will among earth's fairest scenes — may graze among flowery vales and cultivated fields, or browse in the wilderness, and be alike unconscious of nature's charms. The beauty of the landscape inspires within them no thrill of delight; they turn not aside to admire the blushing rose or inhale its fragrance, and crush without emotion the gay cowslip and meek-eyed violet beneath their careless hoof, and nip the grass and daisies, too, in their eager haste for food. ” --- from the Ladies Repository by the Methodist Episcopal General Church Conference, January 1855.
